FAQs
This FAQs consultation includes pregnancy confirmation, nurse’s assessment, and options counseling. The consult helps you to answer critical questions as you consider this personal decision i.e. Do you know what type of abortion you are seeking and do you have knowledge of that procedure? This consultation appointment is designed to give you the information you need to make an informed choice.
1. What types of services are available?
Amal women clinic provides medication abortion through telehealth. We are also able to provide you with contraceptive counseling, prescriptions for birth control, and treatments for UTIs or vaginal infections.
If you need additional support, we may be able to help you find a referral.
2. How do I know if I’m eligible for services at Amal Women Clinic?
You are likely a good fit for our services if your last menstrual cycle was less than 13 weeks ago and you are currently seeking a medication abortion. We are currently able to serve people in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah – or those able to travel to one of those emirates to pick up prescription pills.
If you are under 18, laws for minors vary by emirates, but your age does not make you ineligible for an appointment with us. If you do not fall under these criteria, we recommend visiting I Need An A to find the most current information available on services in your area. You can still request an appointment to seek additional support from our patient navigation team to help you find the resource that is right for you.
3. Is this too good to be true? How do I know this is a legitimate organization?
We totally understand your concerns. We want you to feel comfortable with your healthcare provider. Amal women clinic is a member of the National Abortion Federation and the Abortion Care Network. Here is an article that explains how we got started as a nonprofit, online clinic committed to making it easier for people to get abortion care.
You need to do what is best for you! And we are here for you if you decide you’re ready to get your medicine at home.
4. What is "abortion with pills," or a medication abortion?
“Abortion with pills,” also called a medication abortion, is a modern option for ending an early pregnancy (before 13 weeks) safely and effectively through a combination of medications: mifepristone and misoprostol (or miso only, if mifepristone is not available). Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone which stops the growth of the pregnancy; misoprostol causes the uterus to cramp and expel what’s within, effectively inducing miscarriage.
There are two types of abortion with pills:
1) Mifepristone plus misoprostol: You take the mifepristone pill first, followed 24 to 48 hours later with misoprostol pills. This is the most effective method of abortion with pills (95-98% of the abortions are successful). It has the fewest side effects and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
2) Misoprostol only: Abortion with pills can also be done using only misoprostol pills. The World Health Organization endorses the use of misoprostol alone for early abortion when mifepristone is not available.
Both methods are effective and very safe. Both methods are also widely used by pregnant people around the world.
5. How do they work?
Abortion pills in UAE work by blocking the flow of progesterone to the developing pregnancy (mifepristone) and causing the uterus to cramp and expel what’s within (misoprostol), effectively inducing a miscarriage. The typical experience involves a day of heavy bleeding and cramping.
It’s best to use this method in a comfortable and safe environment. Following your telehealth appointment, Amal Women Clinic provides access to our 24/7 hotline to support you if any concerns arise.
6. Is it safe? What are the risks?
Using abortion pills is very safe. The rate of major complications during an early abortion is very low, and the earlier in pregnancy you get an abortion, the lower the chances are of complications.
One risk is that abortion pills may not work (they may not end the pregnancy). Most providers recommend doing a pregnancy test 4-6 weeks after taking the pills to make sure they worked. If the test is positive, it is important to get follow-up care. (Note: a pregnancy test done earlier than 3-4 weeks after an abortion may show a false positive because it takes time for the pregnancy hormones to leave the body.)
Another risk is if the pregnancy is outside of the uterus. This is called an ectopic or tubal pregnancy. This is very rare (only about 2 of every 100 pregnancies). Ectopic pregnancy is rare, but can lead to serious health consequences if left untreated. We screen for risk factors for ectopic pregnancies before your appointment and have two follow up conversations after your abortion to monitor your health and progress.
Things to look out for are lack of normal bleeding after taking the medications and severe one sided abdominal pain/cramping that can sometimes radiate to your shoulder of jaw. We have a 24/7 call line for any urgent issues.
7. How far into a pregnancy can I use abortion pills?
We provide abortion care with pills in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.
This calculator can help you know how many weeks pregnant you are (based on the first day of your last normal period). People who don’t know the first day of their last period or who have periods that don’t come regularly may need to have an ultrasound or pelvic exam to find out how many weeks pregnant they are.
8. What can I expect after taking abortion pills?
Abortion pills cause bleeding and cramping. This is a natural part of the abortion process and shows that the pills are working. Many people do not have any symptoms after taking the first pill (mifepristone). The bleeding and cramping usually start soon after taking the second set of pills (misoprostol).
The bleeding may be heavier than a normal period and the cramping can be mild to severe. This can vary for each person and by how far along the pregnancy is.
Other common side effects to misoprostol include feeling sick to your stomach, throwing up, diarrhea, chills, and an elevated temperature.
Please call our 24/7 call line if you have any of these symptoms:
- bleeding that soaks through more than 2 maxi sanitary pads per hour for more than 2 hours in a row, OR
- fever of more than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 24 hours,
How to prepare:
- To prepare for taking the second medication at home, orgrecommends gathering the following supplies in advance:
- A heating pad
- Comfortable clothes, including comfy underwear
- Super absorbent maxi pads
- A blanket in case you have chills
- Ice chips and/or popsicles to suck on in case you have nausea or vomiting
- Easily digestible food like plain crackers, white rice, bananas, broth, and plain white bread
- Something to distract you, like movies, tv, magazines, coloring books, or video games
- A friend or other support person to keep you company and help you with anything you need help with.
9. How much does it cost?
The cost of services depends on the type of abortion and the gestational age of the pregnancy. Our patient coordinator will be able give you the price at the time of your scheduling the appointment.
10. What happens if I need to cancel or I change my mind?
Amal women clinic respects your decisions and your ability to choose whether to continue or terminate your pregnancy. If you decide you need to cancel your appointment, please notify our staff so that we can make your time slot available to another woman if she needs it.
11. Does my partner have to know I am having an abortion?
No. You are not required to inform anyone of your decision. We encourage you to do what is best for your personal situation.
12. How do I decide which option, medical abortion or surgical abortion, is right for me?
As long as your pregnancy is less than 10 weeks of gestation you will have the option between the Medical Abortion and the Surgical Abortion. The decision is a personal one which ultimately has to be made by the patient. After the ultrasound the provider will explain both options and can help you decide which option will work best for you.
Many factors can make one option better than the other including the gestational age being in the upper limit and lower limit for the option, availability to return to the center and the parity (number and types of birth) of the deliveries before. At Amal Women Clinic our experienced clinician will explain and help you decide which option is right for you.
